Message from Administration
Today is World Teachers Day and we are indeed blessed to have a fantastic community of educators here at St. Benedict. Teachers play a critical role in inspiring learners to be positive citizens in our world and help them to reach their God given potential. A special thanks to the amazing teachers at St. Benedict!
As October is now here, we reflect on the wonderful start to the school year and turn our thoughts to student achievement and learning. You will be hearing from your students' teacher soon regarding their progress in class as progress reports will be emailed to parent/guardians October 17th, and 18th. We are also pleased to be hosting in-person parent/teacher/student conferences on Thursday, October 27th, 2022, once again.
Lastly, as we enter the Thanksgiving weekend, we hope that you can gather with loved ones and give thanks for all of God’s blessings. We are truly grateful for each member of our school community.
Have a wonderful week and a blessed Thanksgiving Weekend.

Important Message from Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region
We want to share an important update about school buses. Due to the ongoing bus driver shortage and lingering impacts of the public board’s cyber attack on our shared bus planning software, some routes will need to be temporarily cancelled.
Most bus routes are operating normally. However, some routes are experiencing more frequent and prolonged delays (30 minutes or greater).
This temporary measure will be effective Monday, September 19, 2022 and will continue until Christmas, at which time our need for cancellations will be reviewed.
We understand the significant impact this decision will have on our students and their families and caregivers. Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region (STSWR) does this only as a last resort. We hope that this proactive message will allow families and caregivers to better prepare for and react to the cancellation of bus routes.
Please note that delays have not been caused by our current bus drivers. When they are late, it is because they are trying to support students on bus routes that have no driver, with the best of intentions. They do not have to do this. They are trying to help. Please be kind to them!
What Happens If A School Bus Route is Cancelled?
Effective September 19, 2022
A school bus route will be cancelled when the driver shortage causes a route to be late by more than 30 minutes consistently. Affected students and families will be informed immediately of the cancellation period. Cancellations are done on a week to week basis.
Supporting Student Learning
If a school bus route is cancelled, families are responsible for transporting their children to and from school each day.
Where this is not possible, students should access asynchronous learning materials posted by their classroom teacher on their Learning Management System (LMS), either D2L or Google Classroom. Additional activities can be found here: https://bit.ly/WCDSBIW.
Families should contact their school to let them know if they are unable to get to school. The school can also help families to sign out a Chromebook if necessary.
Stay Informed
Families will be informed the day prior to any cancellation. Cancellations will be posted on the STSWR website with an expected return date.
- Register for notifications on the STSWR parent portal
- Check the Bus Delays page on the STSWR website
The Bus Delays page will be updated with cancellation information each afternoon by 4:30 PM.

Financing Post-Secondary: Scholarships, Bursaries, and OSAP
Got a ‘rich uncle’ with a bank full of cash waiting for you to cover your post-secondary costs? Well, I did not either. The reality is that post-secondary education is costly and takes planning, so we hope you’ve begun. Many students supplement their post-secondary savings through scholarships, bursaries, and loans. This article will get you pointed in the right direction to access the necessary resources for information.
Most scholarships for first year students are ‘entrance’ scholarships and are automatically awarded based on marks. Some awards, called bursaries, are based on financial need, but may also include other components such as volunteer service, leadership, or being associated with a service group, employer, or union. These are very individual, and you can search these out using the resources set out below.
The following sites are Canadian websites where you can register and search online for a variety of scholarships, bursaries, and contests to help fund post-secondary education.
The Scholarship Report is a service Guidance subscribes to at Bennies. It is a wonderful resource that you can use to search for scholarship opportunities by the month. It also provides a great deal of post-secondary information for all pathway opportunities. As the Scholarship Report is a proprietary service, access to it must be for the St. Benedict Community. In order, to view the report, go to the Scholarship page on the website and hit the link to the report. You will need a PASSWORD that is for St. Benedict students only. The password can be obtained through guidance.
What can you do now?
- Determine your post- secondary costs including tuition, books, room and board, travel, etc.
- Check parents’ places of employment/ your place of employment or service groups for scholarships or bursaries
- Check with the schools in which you are going to apply
- Check Bennies website, through the Students Services tab, AND the Guidance Google Classroom (code – MXMOHZX)
- Create a scholarship/bursary resume where you collect all of your accomplishments, achievements, involvements, and potential barriers overcame in chronological order; you should line up references from teachers, community members and coaches who can speak to your involvement and character
- Talk seriously, with your family about your plan to fund post-secondary which may include applying for OSAP
OSAP - The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is a financial aid program that can help you pay for college or university. Applying, for OSAP is done individually and one may be eligible for grants (free money!) and/or loans. OSAP applications will open in April or May 2023 for the 2023-2024 school year. Check out the OSAP website OSAP for more information. In order to plan, you can use the OSAP Estimator tool for a quick guide to see if you eligible for loans or grants. This can be completed anytime.
Post-secondary education is an investment in yourself. Planning, as best as possible, will help reduce stress and strain, and is certainly more reliable than finding a ‘rich uncle’.

The St. Benedict Food Garden is the brainchild of Mr. Neil Calhoun and Mr. Ken Hodgins, both culinary instructors with a passion for sustainable food communities and food production. The idea came from their "Soup and Bread" program that was developed in 2019, where both soup and bread are produced in hospitality classes to send to the Cambridge Food Bank.
Upon return from Covid distance learning, they re-focused their in-school catering efforts feeding school staff twice a week. Staff were made aware that meals would have a surcharge of 10% to support the Cambridge Food Bank. In December 2021, St. Benedict Catholic High School donated $500 which was then followed by a $1500 donation this past September.

The St. Benedict School Garden is located on a recaptured part of the school parking lot. The garden includes boxes used for vegetables along with herbs, berries (raspberry and strawberry), and greens. The construction class has recently built and put in place a grow shed that will allow the transition of seedlings to the garden in the spring. Milkweed has been added to support our butterfly and bee population for cross pollination. The garden boxes are reserved for beans, squash, tomatoes, garlic, onions, zucchini with the intention of adding corn to complete the Three Sisters Unity.
Each box is fitted with an irrigation system, which in the future will be fed by the cisterns attached to the Annex eaves trough system.
Both the St. Benedict C.S.S. Technology department and the Science department work together to sustain the garden. The science department contributes seedlings from lab investigations on soil pH, will conduct water testing, and aid with garden maintenance. The technology department builds and maintains the structures within the garden, as well as the garden itself: planting and harvesting the garden product for the Hospitality program and to support the Cambridge Food Bank.
During this summer, when most school staff is off, a volunteer group from the Cambridge Food Bank comes twice a week to irrigate, weed and harvest. This summer alone, the food bank harvested 51lbs of produce to use in their own kitchens. Garlic that was picked and not used in their kitchens were prepared for planting this fall.
The garden provides students and staff the opportunity to contribute to the community it is part of. We consider it to be a physical representation of the Catholic Graduate Expectations, connecting: faith, learning and community. This garden would not have been possible without the support of our school administration, the Waterloo Catholic District School Board, grants from the Waterloo Region School Food Gardens and the staff at the Food Bank. Thank you for seeing the potential in our program.

From the Librarian's Desk
It’s great to see so many students spending time in the library, working on assignments, reading, using the piano, using the exercise bikes, or just relaxing with friends. A gentle reminder that there is NO FOOD in the library during school hours. Light snacks such as muffins or granola bars are fine after school. Please respect our policy regarding food so that we can keep our library clean for both students and our members of the public.
A reminder to students that there will be a WCDSB library technician in the library on Mondays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 11:30AM for school chrome books. If you need a chrome book, need to replace your chrome book, or need a charger, please come to the library on either of those days.
