College and University Presentations
We have been fortunate in arranging visits to our school with liaison officers from several Ontario universities and colleges who will be making presentations to interested grade 12 students. The presentations will get started at the end of September and provide an excellent way for students to ask questions about specific schools that they are interested in. Students must sign up to attend the presentations that they are interested in attending, by the end of lunch the day prior to the visit. While we do not limit the number of visits that students may attend, we do encourage students to be selective about the visits that they attend as many of them take place during class time. Students are responsible for any school work that they miss if they choose to attend a presentation. Please refer to the complete list of presentations that is posted on our school website by going to Student Services > Post-secondary planning > Post-secondary visits.

Take Our Kids To Work Day
This year, Take Our Kids to Work Day falls on Wednesday, November 14th. This nation-wide program is an opportunity for all grade 9 students to experience the world of work by shadowing a family member for the day. Permission forms and further information will be distributed in homerooms later this week. The permission form needs to be signed and returned to their homeroom teacher in order for the student to have their absence from school approved. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Guidance department.
Community Service Opportunities
In addition to fulfilling an important diploma requirement, volunteering provides students with a way to give back to their community. As opportunities become known to the guidance department, they will be announced on the announcement system, posted on the Guidance bulletin board and listed in the BENN.

Community Service opportunities at St. Mary of the Visitation
Our Parish has a program called “Special Friends”. It is for children and young people who have special needs. We seek to partner them with “Buddies” who would be with them in their programs (eg. Children’s Liturgy, Visitation Kids, Iwannago or Kids Klub) as one to one support. We have three trained EA’s who are overseeing the program but would like to invite teens to serve as the “Buddies”. You may want to consider this if you are looking for a challenging and rewarding experience!
Also, are you tech savvy? Do you like videography, powerpoint, and running the show? Consider joining our parish Tech Team. Talk to Father Freitas or visit www.stmaryhespeler.ca for more information. Training begins soon!

Advanced Placement at St. Benedict
Advanced Placement (AP) is an internationally recognized program that allows students to enrich the Ontario Curriculum with the goal of achieving university accreditation.
What does the research say about AP students?
Research shows that the best predictor of whether or not a student completes a university degree is not their high school grades or standardized tests. Rather, the best predictor is how many challenging courses a student has taken in high school. Students who challenge themselves with AP courses and exams are much more likely to complete a university degree in four years or less.

Junior boys soccer
The junior boys took on the Celtics of Waterloo in a rare Friday afternoon match nearly two weeks ago. The young saint squad took an early lead in the 14th minute off the foot of Colin Vrugteman. Colin kept pressing and put another two goals into the back of the next within the next 7 minutes for a natural hat trick. The team never looked back, scoring another 5 goals (2 by Razen Emira, and single goals by Austin Machado, Daniel Pop and Noah Tekelsion). The final score was 8-2 for the saints.
This afternoon the Saints FC took on the Mustangs in the battle of Cambridge to claim bragging rights as the best Catholic soccer team in the city. The boys took the pitch with great confidence and displayed great ball control during the match. Adam Kocjan scored his first goal of the season off a beauty corner kick by Daniel Pop.
The team maintained control of the match and had numerous other scoring attempts with Spiros Goros potting an early second half goal to give the team a 2 nil lead.
A shout out to our two keepers, Dorian Rocha and Lucas Caprara, who both claimed shutouts. The Saints take on the Celtics of Waterloo next Monday.

Junior boys football
The junior boys football team used a huge second half to dominate St. Mary's 28-8 last week. Touchdowns were scored by Jacob Kaminski, Najay Peart, and Caleb Hamilton. A two point convert reception by Max Benoit helped seal the deal. The defense shut down the St. Mary's run game and contributed a touchdown of their own courtesy of TJ Delafranier. A special shout out to coach Mathe for his clutch play calling and Zack Morris for always keeping it cool.
