POST-SECONDARY PLANNING

College and University visits
Colleges and universities will begin information sessions as early as next week. Students are asked to sign up only for those they are most interested in. Being in class should be their priority. They should not be missing a summative assignment or test to attend a session.

Students who sign up 24 hours before the presentation will be signed out through attendance. Only those signed up ahead of time will be allowed to attend.

An updated list is maintained on the calendar on the school website. To see the complete list go to Student Services, Guidance, Post-Secondary planning, and then click on the Post-secondary Visits tab.

Please speak with your guidance counsellor if you have any questions.

First Robotics is back!

We had our first meeting last Thursday at lunch. If you are interested in joining the robotics team, please see Ms. D'Aversa or Mr. Chaves.

Bennies’ HOSA Club Success Story!

Congratulations to Keira Gould on her 2nd place achievement in the Sports Medicine category at HOSA – Future Health Professionals Canada, Spring Leadership Conference (SLC). The event was held in Toronto in May 2023. Keira, then a grade 11 student, achieved 2nd out of 133 high school students in Ontario. A special thanks to Mrs. Taylor for supporting all the students who attended SLC.
The top three competitors from each event at the SLC qualified to compete at the International Leadership Conference on June 21-24, 2023 in Dallas, TX. Keira was among 200 students that were part of the team of students representing Canada. The experience and knowledge she gained at the ILC conference was empowering. The Canadian delegation ended up with 53 top 10 finalists and 25 top 3 finalists, making ILC 2023 one of our best years thus far! China, South Korea, USA, Mexico and Puerto Rico were some of the countries that participated.
Congratulations also go to Hailey Schell and Keeley Martin who competed together as a team in the First Aid and CPR category and qualified within the top 30 of approximately 300 teams in their written event so that they had the opportunity to showcase their practical skills in the second round of their event at the SLC in Toronto.

The mission of HOSA is to empower future health professionals to become leaders in the global health community through education, collaboration, and experience.

If you’re interested in being a member of the Bennies’ HOSA club and participating in this year’s Spring Leadership conference alongside hundreds of students from all over Ontario, join one of our lunch time meetings on Thursdays in A2 (the Annex) or contact Mrs. Taylor and Ms. D’Aversa for more information.

If you’re interested in a future career in the field of healthcare, consider taking a healthcare course right here at St. Benedict! Choose grade 11 healthcare (TPJ3M) and then grade 12 healthcare (TPJ4M). In these courses, students learn about:
  • Human anatomy and physiology
  • Health care terminology
  • Conventional and complementary methods of disease prevention and treatment
  • Basic procedures and the use of medical instruments and equipment
  • Vital signs
  • Communication in health care
  • Career opportunities in the field
These courses also support the Specialist High Skills Major – Health and Wellness program.
Questions? See Mrs. Taylor in A2 for more information.

Are you interested in the fields of medicine and healthcare?

Consider joining the HOSA club!

The mission of HOSA Canada is to enable students to become leaders in the healthcare industry by enabling future health professionals to acquire knowledge, skills training and leadership development through Canada’s largest health science competition.

Our first meeting was on Wednesday October 4 at the start of lunch, but if you missed it and are interested, please see Mrs. Taylor and Ms. D’Aversa for more details.

Attention Grade 9 and 10 problem solvers!

The school's Coding Club is back in swing and this week we started looking at past contests to prepare for this year's Beaver Computing Challenge.

The Beaver Computing Challenge introduces computer science to students. It is designed to get students with little or no previous experience excited about computing. No coding knowledge is required to write the contest, just a keen interest in problem-solving!

Many of our grade 9 and 10 math classes will be writing the contest in class. If your class is not, or you are not taking math this semester, see Mr. Milardovic in room 216 at lunch.

The club meets Modays and Thursdays at lunch to tackle past contest questions. For more information on the club, visit the Coding Club page on the school website. For practice contest questions see Mr. Milardovic in room 216 before school, at lunch, or after school, or find the 2012 contest questions under the Useful links section of the page.

From the librarian’s desk

Now that we are well into the semester and with the cooler weather coming here are a few reminders for students using the library during school hours:
1. NO FOOD in the library. Lidded drinks are permitted.
2. Be in uniform.
3. Do not move library furniture.
4. Please no standing or congregating in groups. Find a seat or go into the school or outside.
We wish all St. Bennies students and staff a Happy Thanksgiving. We are grateful for the privilege of serving the St. Bennies community.
