A Canada-wide annual event, “Take Our Kids To Work Day” is an important first step in Grade 9 students’ career awareness and their ultimate ability to make choices and decisions during high school about their future careers and pathway directions. Grade 9 students from all five of the WCDSB secondary schools will be spending November 6, 2024 in the community, at the workplace of their parent, guardian, or family friend.
Secondary schools will have permission forms signed by parents or guardians on file for all students participating in “Take Our Kids to Work”. In a majority of cases, the students will be under the direct supervision of their parents or guardians during their day at work.

Saints Esports Team
We are excited to introduce the Saints Esports Team at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School, where students will have the opportunity to compete in Rocket League, a highly strategic, team-based video game. Esports is rapidly growing in schools across the world, and we are thrilled to bring this innovative program to our students.
Why Esports?
Esports is much more than just playing video games. It offers a unique platform to teach valuable life skills in a digital environment. Here’s why we believe in esports:
-
Teamwork and Collaboration: Just like traditional sports, esports fosters teamwork. Students work together to achieve common goals, learning how to communicate effectively and support one another.
-
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: Esports requires fast decision-making and strategic thinking. Players must adapt their strategies to changing game dynamics, which helps them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
-
Inclusion and Community: Esports provides a space for students of all backgrounds to belong. Whether they are new to gaming or experienced, all students can participate, making this a highly inclusive environment where they can build friendships and a sense of belonging.
-
Transferable Skills: Through esports, students develop digital literacy, leadership skills, and emotional resilience, all of which are transferable to both academic and real-world settings.
Addressing Concerns
We understand that some may see video games as a distraction. However, our esports program is designed with students’ well-being in mind. Esports promotes a healthy balance of physical activity, mental engagement, and social interaction. Our program focuses on:
-
Holistic Development: Esports fosters mental, physical, and emotional health. Players are encouraged to maintain a balanced lifestyle, incorporating physical exercise and ergonomics to ensure well-being.
-
Academic Support: Participation in the esports team comes with the expectation of maintaining good academic standing. Our coaches/teachers are happy to work closely with students to ensure they are excelling both in the game and in their studies.
-
Career Pathways: Esports opens doors to exciting future opportunities. From scholarships to career pathways in technology, marketing, and media, esports is a growing industry where students can thrive.
We are proud to launch the Saints Esports Team during ‘lunch A’ this semester with the hope of making it available to ‘lunch B’ students in the future. Esports is not just about gaming; it’s about learning, growing, and building a community. If you have any questions or would like more information, please don’t hesitate to contact Mr. Rolland Chidiac, Saints Esports Team Coach.
Thank you for your continued support.
