Saints support those in need

The St. Benedict CSS food drive concluded last Friday with over 40 boxes of food collected for the Cambridge Self Help Food Bank. Students and their families contributed generously so that our Cambridge neighbours who are less fortunate could eat.

St. Benedict Fundraiser Vendor Market a success
St. Benedict’s third fundraiser vendor market, held on Saturday, October 19th, was a success, and there were many contributing factors.
To begin, 83 vendors generously donated table fees to be a part of the event, and these fees will directly assist local and global social justice initiatives in the school including the Dominican Encounter with Faith and Hospitality.
In addition, vendors either donated a percentage of their sales back to our students’ fundraising efforts ($250.78) or donated a raffle prize. Likewise, there were three food trucks present whose owners also donated a percentage of their sales back to our students’ fundraising efforts ($180).
The Operation Smile Club ran the raffle table and raised $291.10 in donations on the day of the event, and there was a staff raffle held after the event which raised $510! These donations will cover the cost of surgeries to repair the cleft lip or cleft palate of three children.
A group of amazing students from Mrs. Currie’s math class and the WE Day trip worked tirelessly with Mrs. Currie, Mrs. Kot and Ms. Stockie baking a variety of items for the bake sale, and they raised $384.90 for WE Charities!
A HUGE thanks goes out to the fantastic student volunteers who assisted with the massive jobs of set-up and clean-up, helping vendors with a variety of tasks (including helping them carry their products in and out of the school) and running the kids' zone, raffle table and bake table! Students also ran the prize table where local business partners thoughtfully donated items to be won! This day truly could not have happened without these students!
Lastly, as always, the St. Benedict school community played a large role in the success of this event. They generously helped out with their time, essential advertising efforts, purchasing raffle tickets and shopping at the market! Special thanks go out to Mr. Renner and Mr. Olinski who always help out and let us use their spaces - and Mme. Barbosa, Mrs. Rocha and Mr. Milardovic who always go above and beyond!!!

Are you considering volunteering at St. Benedict?
Volunteers are a welcome resource at St. Benedict C.S.S. The school is in a position of trust with regards to students and must strive to protect their intellectual, physical, mental, and emotional well-being. As such, the WCDSB administrative procedure (APO 001) mandates that all volunteers be screened, references checked, and Criminal Background Check (CBC) done. School administration reserves the right to oppose or rescind any volunteer placement.

Advanced Placement at St. Benedict
Advanced Placement (AP) is an internationally recognized program that allows students to enrich the Ontario Curriculum with the goal of achieving university accreditation.
What does the research say about AP students?
Research shows that the best predictor of whether or not a student completes a university degree is not their high school grades or standardized tests. Rather, the best predictor is how many challenging courses a student has taken in high school. Students who challenge themselves with AP courses and exams are much more likely to complete a university degree in four years or less.

Junior Girls Basketball
The Junior Girls Basketball season came to an end yesterday with a loss to a tough St. Mary's opponent in their semi final. The girls fell behind early but managed to claw their way back into the game as it wore on, but were unable to overcome the early deficit and fell short. The girls showed great passion and determination day in and day out and Coaches Lam and Mathé could not be more proud of the way they played all season long!
Senior Girls Basketball
After a hard fought battle against Rez, the senior girls basketball team fell short in their semi-final game last night. Leading scorers for the Saints were Lara Johnson and Julianna Vasquez. Congratulations on a great season ladies!

The team played Rockway, winning in 3 sets on Wednesday, and a nail biting 5 set match on Thursday!
