Students Getting Into the Cold for Social Justice

Have you heard of A Better Tent City or The Bridges? These are some of the organizations that support people who are unhoused in our community, and seek solutions to the housing crisis in our region.

If you’ve ever wondered what you can do to support people who experience housing insecurity and want to learn more, then sign up to participate in INTO THE COLD – a truly transformative experience.

Join students from across all our Catholic high schools at St. Mary’s high school in an act of solidarity; build a student tent city to sleep in overnight, listen to guest speakers, meet people who have experienced housing insecurity, and be part of an action plan of support.

You also earn 20 volunteer community service hours! Check out this presentation for an informational slideshow to learn more, and pick up a permission form.

Students will organize their own tent groupings and gear. Students sharing a tent should submit their forms together. Participation is limited, so to secure your spot, submit your forms ASAP to the main office, and by November 10th at the latest.

Fall Food Drive a Phenomenal Success!

A huge thank you to all the classes and staff who contributed to this year’s Fall Food Drive! Your generosity and enthusiasm truly made a difference for our local community.

A special shoutout goes to Ms. Danielle Trentini’s class, who not only raised funds but also delivered flyers around the neighbourhood to help get our wider community involved.

Congratulations to Mr. Krzysztofik’s homeroom in Portable 8 — the winners of the pizza party and supervision coverage!

Thanks again to everyone who helped make this initiative such a success. Your efforts will directly support families through the Cambridge Food Bank — a true example of the Bennies spirit!

Clubs & Activities

Cosmo Club: Creativity, Community, and Connection at St. Benedict

This year, Cosmo Club is celebrating an incredible milestone — 130 members, the largest in St. Benedict’s history! Our club, led by Cosmo Teachers: Lynn McKellar and Annette DeBrabandere continues to grow as more students join in to share their creativity, build confidence, and support school-wide events.

Throughout the year, Cosmo Club members lend their talents to a variety of SAC and Arts initiatives, including school plays, the annual Haunted House, and Mental Health Week.

This past Halloween, 85 members helped bring the Haunted House to life on Friday, October 31. After two months of preparation — sometimes meeting twice a week — students transformed their ideas into reality, designing 36 characters and 25 chilling scenes that thrilled over 300 students who toured the attraction.

The event raised donations that will go toward supporting local families in need over the holidays.
Beyond special events, Cosmo Club hosts a variety of hands-on workshops and tutorials focused on hair, makeup, skin care, and nail art. These sessions give members a chance to learn new skills, express themselves, and build friendships in a supportive environment.

At its heart, Cosmo Club is about more than just creativity — it’s about community. Our mandate is to create a safe, inclusive space where everyone feels welcome, valued, and inspired. Whether students come to learn, to help, or simply to connect, Cosmo Club continues to be a magical place where friendships and confidence flourish.

From the Librarian's Desk

Hey Bennies – it’s so great to see everyone so hard at work this semester! We’re nearing the halfway point already. Keep it up!

Library Classes

This term, I’ve been busy visiting classrooms across the school to teach lessons on every librarian’s favourite subject: information literacy. You might see me in your class soon to explore topics like how to:
  • search effectively for reliable information
  • conduct scientific research
  • tell fact from fiction online
  • strengthen your arguments with accurate citations
  • and use generative AI responsibly
Information and digital literacy are core skills every Ontario secondary school graduate needs, and librarians are the experts who can help.

Are you a teacher, student, or parent who’d like to learn more? Email me—I’d love to connect!

Your Library, Your Story

Everyone has a library story – what’s yours? Cambridge Public Library wants to hear about it! Share your favourite library memory or tell us what the library means to you. Postcards are available at each Cambridge Public Library location. We can’t wait to read them!
Email librarian Ryan at rorr@cambridgepl.ca for any and all library questions!
