Vale, pastor bone! 🕯️

This Easter Monday, we mourned the passing of Pope Francis. His life was a witness to compassion, courage, and a deep love for those on the margins of society.

Just one day before his death, during his final Urbi et Orbi blessing, he offered a message that now feels especially sacred. Though physically weak, his spirit remained strong. He called us to rise with Christ, to be pilgrims of hope, and to build a world where no one is forgotten. He spoke for those suffering from war, displacement, and injustice. He urged us to reject the logic of fear that isolates and hardens hearts, and instead embrace love that welcomes, heals, and includes.

In Catholic education, we carry this mission forward, helping one another to rise in love that is just, inclusive, and courageous.

May Pope Francis rest in the peace of the Risen Christ.

His last message is found here: Urbi et Orbi (video); Urbi et Orbi (text).

Visiting Grade 8 Teachers

As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting students through their transition from elementary to high school, St. Benedict is introducing a new initiative to strengthen the connection between Grade 8 and Grade 9 teachers. This collaboration aims to provide a smoother transition for students as they adjust to the challenges of high school life.
Thirteen Grade 8 teachers and nine Grade 9 teachers have been selected to participate in this valuable cross-panel initiative. The first step in the process involved an initial meeting where teachers discussed the key differences and similarities between secondary and elementary school. They also explored the unique challenges that students face both in their final year of elementary school and as they begin their high school journey.
This collaboration will continue with a series of in-classroom visits scheduled for April and May. During these visits, Grade 8 teachers will observe Grade 9 math, English, and French classes to gain a deeper understanding of the high school experience their students will soon encounter. Likewise, Grade 9 teachers will spend time in Grade 8 classrooms to see how students are prepared before making the leap to high school.

After the classroom visits, teachers will come together for a debrief session to share insights and strategies. The goal of these discussions is to identify ways to better support students during this crucial transition and to ensure they are well-prepared for academic success in subjects such as math, English, and French.

Through this collaborative effort, St. Benedict hopes to make the transition to high school as seamless as possible for both students and their families, setting them up for success in their future academic endeavors.

Girls Rugby

Last Wednesday, the Varsity Girls Rugby team hit the pitch for their first 2 games of the season in Waterloo.

First, the Saints battled Monsignor Doyle in a back and forth battle. Scoring for Saints was opened up by first year player, Marianna Ruiz. Nevaeh Holmes scored next, locking the score at 10 a side. Unfortunately, a late break by Doyle, put them up 15-10 to win the game.

Your Saints did not have much time to dwell, as they were back on the pitch an hour later vs St. Mary’s. The Saints fought hard with trys scored by both Chloe Friedrich and Gabi Stewart, but ultimately suffered a 27-10 defeat. Solid individual efforts by Miqaela Olatundun in the rucks and Shyla Jelski-Porter and Saige Bromley with some solid tackles.

The Saints look for redemption this Wednesday as they play St. Mary’s at the Conestoga Fields in Cambridge.

News from the Library

From the librarian’s desk

Hey Bennies – it’s been a busy and exciting semester so far, with students visiting for books, study spaces, fun events, and more. With a student Book Club, art events, research workshops and even mock elections, the library continues to be a vibrant hub for learning and connection. I’m continuously inspired by the enthusiasm our students bring through the doors each day, whether they’re here for quiet study, to collaborate on group work, or simply looking for their next favourite read.

Student Vote

With two elections taking place this semester, students have had incredible opportunities to explore the democratic process in action thanks to Student Vote, a national initiative that brings democracy to life through large-scale mock elections.Mr. Healey and his dedicated team of student volunteers ran Student Vote events for both the federal and provincial elections, welcoming hundreds of students to the library to cast their ballots. Bennies students led the way in civic engagement, casting more ballots than any other school in Cambridge in both elections! Check out the full results from the Student Vote federal election here.
